You are currently viewing How music can help you learn Italian

Self-study is extremely important when learning a new language, as a matter of fact; it comes second only to speaking with native speakers. What better way to speed up your learning process than doing it whilst enjoying your self- study time?

Music is fun, enjoyable and sticks with your long term memory.

How many times have you listened to your favourite songs? I bet you know every single word. Repetition makes it easier t for words and phrases to stick in your brain, but it will mainly stick because songs give you a chance to learn in context. What does it mean?
Learning isolated words won’t take you anywhere in language learning, you must learn vocabulary used in sentences which makes sense.

That it’s called a context and even though we cannot compare adult and children second language acquisition, learning in context is exactly what children do, starting with their first language.

Singing songs will certainly help you improving your pronunciation

If you are a beginner is always best to ask for advice as you don’t want to end up listening to songs sang in dialect. I would also read the lyrics whilst singing at least at the beginning. If you want to focus on pronunciation alone you don’t necessarily have to understand the lyrics, but I strongly advise to do so in order to learn new vocabulary.

earn Italian with music

Music is convenient; it is portable, you can listen to it anywhere you are.

Make a playlist of your favourite Italian songs and listen to it whilst walking, commuting or at the gym. For maximum benefit pay attention to every word and maybe you could quietly sing your favourite songs whilst on the train, at the park, why not?

The Italian song I chose to help you out

This year whilst watching the Italian music festival Sanremo 2021 I came across a beautiful song called “Io sì”. I was blown away by the artist’s voice, interpretation and above all, by the meaning of its lyrics. I might have played it on YouTube thousands times till I had an epiphany and I realised I could actually use it for linguistic purposes.

Hence, I added Italian subtitles to the original video and designed a fun listening exercise just for you, Enjoy!

Who is the singer?

Laura Pausini is one of Italy’s most famous pop singers. This successful singer, songwriter and record producer is not only famous in Italy. Her talent and amazing voice are acclaimed internationally, especially in Latin America as she performs and records in Spanish too. She is actually a real Latin superstar. She also sings in English!
This time she outdid herself and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song-Film Award with the song “Seen” (Io sì), from the movie “The Life Ahead”, La vita davanti a sé directed by Eduardo Ponte whose mother, the legendary Sophia Loren, had a starring role. The Italian movie, whose copy rights were bought by Netflix, was nominated for a Golden Globe as best foreign language film, but unfortunately did not make it to number one.

(Io sì)

Laura Pausini

Quando tu finisci le parole
Sto qui
Sto qui
Forse a te ne servono due sole
Sto qui
Sto qui

Quando impari a sopravvivere
E accetti l’impossibile
Nessuno ci crede
Io sì

Non lo so, io
Che destino è il tuo
Ma se vuoi
Se mi vuoi sono qui
Nessuno ti sente
Ma io sì

Quando tu non sai più dove andare
Sto qui
Sto qui
Scappi via o alzi le barriere
Sto qui
Sto qui

Quando essere invisibile
È peggio che non vivere
Nessuno ti vede
Io sì

Non lo so, io
Che destino è il tuo
Ma se vuoi
Se mi vuoi sono qui
Nessuno ti vede
Ma io sì

Chi si ama lo sa
Serve incanto e realtà
A volte basta quello che c’è
La vita davanti a sé

Non lo so io
Che destino è il tuo
Ma se vuoi
Se mi vuoi sono qui
Nessuno ti vede
Io sì

Nessuno ci crede
Ma io sì

“Seen” English lyrics

When you feel like no one understands you,
I will… I will.
When you think no love can ever heal you,
mine will… mine will.

And when you feel like you’re invisible
and no one sees you at all,
I want you to know that you’re seen.

‘Cause I see you
and I see too
who you are.
You can’t hide from me.
I want you to know that you’re seen.

When you feel like this whole world’s against you,
I’m here… I’m here.
You’ll always have someone who will protect you
right here… right here.

And when you feel like you’re invisible,
I’ll see you through it all.
I want you to know that you’re seen.

‘Cause I see you
and I see too
who you are!
You can’t hide from me.
I want you to know that you’re seen.

All alone in this world
we all long to be heard.
Don’t think no one knows what you feel.
I want you to know that you’re seen.

‘Cause I see you
and I see too
who you are!
You can’t hide from me!
I want you to know that you’re seen.
I want you to know that you’re seen.
